I just purchased a 10" Cave transportable from the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club. I want to completely restore this scope and will need help. The scope appears to be on a non original pier as the pier is a greater diameter than the mount base. There are no Cave labels on the mount or scope that I can see from the photos. The mount appears to be 1.5 or 2" shafts from the pics. The photos can be seen on Cloudy nights classifieds if a search is done for Cave...it is the most recent posting for a cave scope. Am driving up there this weekend from NC to pick it up and would like some advice on what to look for when inspecting
thanks tim

Can ya give a link to it? I scanned 10 pages of 'Cloudy Night' but didn't see it. Didn't log in, that's probably why I didn't find it right off. 1st - take a camera with ya. Photograph EVERYTHING. AND I DO MEAN EVERYTHING! you'll need it for reference later on. 2nd - Keep a log of what you see of it, and how you dis-assemble it for transport. That will come in handy later on as your re-assemble it later. 3rd - Don't be too eager! Might talk them down in price. you never know, till you try! 4th - Is everything original (except pier, as you said)? especially on the OTA. focuser, spider, objective mount, finder, rotating rings, integrity of the tube. 5th - Look at the mirrors. The secondary can be easily replace, but to redo the objective can get expensive. 6th - If they'll let you, lock down both axis's, gently take hold and rock them back and forth, up and down. Seeing if you can feel any 'play' in the bearings. 7th - Are all the original motors, cables and control boxes available? It's not that important, because they can be replaced, but it's a nice touch!
Check out the thread I started. We're working on the same type of 'scope! Hope we can share as we go along with our re-builds!

Sorry about the multiple posts, getting use to the site, and how they got it laid out. The admin does need to set some of the user controls better. just saying....any way.
Let us know how it goes.
