My 8" F/7 Cave mount saddle is stamped 5-57. The telescope was purchased from the original owner in 1965. With exception of the RA and Dec steel shafts, all parts of the mount (including pier and support legs) are made of aluminum. A circular disc of 1/2" thick steel at the top of the pier supports the equatorial mount.
All later model Cave telescopes that I've seen have pier tubes made of steel, not cast aluminum.
Does anyone know the period when Cave used cast aluminum for their piers and/or when the switch to steel occurred?

I believe it was very early. My early 70's is steel. So it would have been earlier than that. I know that the aluminum did not offer enough rigidity and weight and was the reason for the switch.
