I am a member of Amateur Astronomers, Inc. (AAI) and United Astronomy Clubs of NJ (UACNJ) in New Jersey. We have a 16" Cave Astrola with a complete Cave mount that we regularly use in a slide-off roof observatory located at our UACNJ site at Jenny Jump State Park near Hope, NJ. We have plans to do some restoration/replacement/repairs to the tube, mounting rings and mount. However, we don't want to do anything that will adversely affect the value of the instrument. In that regard, I have a few questions:
1. Is there a way to tell if the tube is an original Cave tube?
2. If it is original, would replacing it affect the value of the scope? It is slightly "out of round" and may need a few other repairs Can you suggest a method for repairing it or finding another Cave tube?
3. The tracking is a little sloppy. Can you suggest a method or website that explains how to "tighten it up" without disturbing the original Cave gears and mount?
4. Can you suggest a method/manual/website/person that can help us restore the scope?
5. Can you suggest a way to tell if the mirror is one of the special ones that are more valuable? We re-coated it a few years ago, and it's in good condition.
Thanks,
